Come on this adventure with me to learn about Digital Citizenship.

I think that teens should protect their privacy. Also you don’t know who sees your account if schools or jobs see a post that they don’t think aligns with their values your job or place at that school could be declined. I would also say going to Kings Junior High I am not pressured by peers to post anything. Social media can be very bad for all ages especially 13-17 because that when kids feel the most pressured when in school with friends. Digital citizenship refers to responsible technology usage, and teaching digital citizenship is essential to helping students achieve and understand digital literacy, as well as ensuring cyberbully prevention, online safety, digital responsibility, and digital health & wellness.

RESEARCH ON DIGITAL -CITIZENSHIP: Digital citizenship is the state of having access to the Internet and communication technologies that help promote equal opportunity, democracy, technology skills, and human rights. To be a good digital citizen you should always report bad behavior. Did you know that nearly half of young people have received intimidating, threatening or nasty messages online. Also make sure to stay away from cyber bullying. Of children currently experiencing a mental health problem, over 2/3 (68%) say they have experienced cyberbullying in the last year. More youths experienced cyberbullying on instagram than any other platform with 42%. Seventy one percent of the survey participants said that social media platforms do not do enough to prevent cyberbullying. Technology is a huge advancement to daily life.

Digital citizenship related with school

Kids are getting bullied online every day. Not only that but kids are getting scammed constantly. Now more than ever schools should be helping with being safe online. I think it would be good for schools because sometimes kids couldn’t have a good connection at home or a way to get notified. If it was at school that’d be better because everyone/most everyone goes to school.

My school, Kings junior high/high school/elementary school has a website. I talked all about the school and how it works. It also has a few articles/newspapers that the students write or the teachers. As I was looking through the website, I stumbled upon the website with a few pages talking about online safety at the elementary. It was by a teacher named Mrs. McRae. She talked about how they keep the computers at the elementary safe. they block all on the unsafe website.

They also have a thing on the main monitor for the teacher, or they can look at all the other computers to make sure they’re on task. In the high school, there is way more freedom. They get the room computers, so the teachers don’t know what they’re looking at. There’s more of a  chance for something to happen in high school l then to happen in Jr. High or elementary. In the junior high, each persons phone is monitored by putting them in little pockets.

It would be way better if what I had at my school was at other school/public school. (since I go to a Private School). I think it would help so many people. In all, it would help so I think it should happen.

Reflection on Online safety

Online safety and digital citizenship is growing more than ever. With that their are scams, cookies, adds, and inappropriate content. Not only do family member/friends try and help you to stay safe on the internet, so do schools. Looking through the schools in the state of Washington, I have found the schools with safety information about digital citizenship/online safety on their website. They have programs trying to help you to stay safe on the internet. Here are some.

In the Shoreline school district, (In Washington), they have an entire website about all different types of internet safety. With links guiding you to other websites of their own about how to stay safe in certain occasions.

Like Internet Safety, Privacy & Security, Relationships & Communication, Cyber bullying & Digital Drama, Digital Footprints & Reputation, Self-Image & Identity, and Information Literacy.

In the Internet Safety, they talk about online predators. An online predator is normally an older man that tries to prey on or lure an unsuspecting child. Sometimes the predator tries to make themselves look like another child, trying to relate themselves to the kid or to make the kid feel safe. Normally the predator targets teens. (from the age of 14-17). Asking for sexual questions or to send sexual pictures. Not only does the internet safety talk about predators, but they also talk about online relationships and how that can be risky.

Everett Schools has a website but it’s not as informative. It talks about how you should have empathy and respect for everyone on the internet. They also talk about how they tie in technology with their school. Using it for teachers, Students, and other staff in the school.

In the Battle Ground Public schools, they have a website about how they have technology that the students can use. Though they have the protection act on the computers/devices that stop the students from using any inappropriate websites. In the South Whidbey district, they have a website about online safety. They also have a part about having you family stay safe on the internet. it talks about how to stay safe going through generations. It says that the parents need to keep the students/children off inappropriate websites.

So if you are still a student, and you need help being safe on the internet. Look at your school for advice. they might surprise you.
